We always have to make choices. Some of them are super easy to make. Other decisions may take some soul searching. As business owners, we, of course, are the leaders of our companies and have to face those challenges. But, that is leadership. Leadership is about taking a stand. It may not be popular with everyone and that’s okay. You have to do what is right for your organization. We know along the way that some people will not follow the rules. As leaders, you have to find ways to make sure they don’t cut corners or be willing to part ways with them.
There are so many books on leadership and developing your leadership style. Stephen Covey had great advice in that monumental book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. "Be proactive, begin with the end in mind and think win/win” are great habits to practice. “Seek first to understand, then to be understood” stands out the most for me. As leaders, sometimes we have to step back and listen. We have to be flexible. Thoughts and opinions can change. But at the same time, we have to know, understand and remember our core operating procedures and beliefs.
Bottom line, know how you want to run your business. Don’t feel bad when you have to go against the grain. Keep your goals in the forefront. Follow and enforce your rules and regulations. Covey said leadership is based on a philosophy. Set and maintain your standards. Always live up to them! If the shoe (this could be your unique style, brand or “habit”) fits, put it on and wear it with pride and confidence!
